Quick paper size reference
Choosing the correct page size is one of the first decisions in any printing project. It affects layout, page count, binding, paper usage, portability and the finished appearance of the book. The most frequently used international sizes in India are from the A-series, while B-series and inch-based trim sizes are also common in publishing.
| Size | Dimensions | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| A3 | 297 × 420 mm | Posters, charts, folded sheets and large-format documents |
| A4 | 210 × 297 mm | Workbooks, manuals, reports, thesis documents and educational material |
| A5 | 148 × 210 mm | Books, guides, notebooks, compact study material and manuals |
| B5 | 176 × 250 mm | Textbooks, journals, reference books and larger paperbacks |
| 6 × 9 in | 152.4 × 228.6 mm | Trade paperbacks, non-fiction, novels and self-published books |
What is trim size?
Trim size is the final width and height of a printed page after cutting. If your book is described as A5, the finished page is 148 × 210 mm. The artwork supplied to a printer may be slightly larger when bleed is required, but the customer receives the trimmed size.
For predictable production, create the interior PDF at the exact intended trim size rather than designing in one size and asking the printer to shrink or enlarge it later.
A4 vs A5 vs B5 for books
A4 gives the most writing and diagram space and is therefore useful for workbooks, training manuals and academic material. A5 is more compact and portable, making it suitable for novels, study guides and reference books. B5 provides a useful middle ground when A5 feels too compact but A4 feels too large.
The best choice depends on the type of content. Image-heavy pages, tables, mathematical material and worksheets often benefit from a larger page, while continuous prose is usually easier to carry and read in a smaller trim size.
Bleed and safe margins
Bleed is extra artwork extending outside the final trim edge so background colours or images can reach the edge after cutting. Important text, page numbers and logos should remain inside the safe area. Binding also needs an inner gutter so text does not feel crowded near the spine.
Before submitting a file, confirm trim size, bleed, margins, binding and cover dimensions. A cover PDF must also account for spine width, which changes with page count and paper thickness.
How size changes printing cost
Size influences how efficiently pages are imposed on a larger production sheet. It can also change the number of pages needed for the same content. For that reason, a smaller finished book is not automatically cheaper if the layout creates substantially more pages. Chaitanya Print recommends comparing the complete specification—size, page count, paper, colour, binding and quantity—rather than judging cost from size alone.
Which size should you choose?
Choose A4 for writing space and large diagrams, A5 for portability, B5 for a textbook-style balance, and 6 × 9 inch for a familiar trade-book proportion. If the book already has a finished layout, avoid changing the trim size without reflowing the design.
