Why the exported PDF matters
A document can look correct in Word, InDesign or another design program but change during export. Printing is produced from the supplied final file, so review the actual PDF page by page. The goal is to remove ambiguity before production begins.
1. Confirm the final trim size
The PDF page dimensions should normally match the intended finished book size, with bleed included according to the printer's file requirement. Do not send an A4 file for an A5 book and assume it will always scale perfectly: font size, margins and line breaks may become unsuitable.
2. Check fonts
Fonts should be embedded or otherwise handled correctly in the final PDF. Missing fonts can cause substitutions, spacing changes or character problems. Pay special attention to equations, regional-language text and specialized symbols.
3. Review image quality
Images should have sufficient effective resolution at the size they appear on the page. Enlarging a small image in the layout does not create new detail. Also check that charts and screenshots remain legible at final printed size.
4. Add bleed where artwork reaches the edge
If a background or image runs to the cut edge, extra bleed may be required outside the trim line. Keep critical text and logos inside a safe area. Exact bleed requirements should be confirmed with the production specification.
5. Check margins and gutter
The inner margin needs enough space for binding. A perfect-bound or hardcover book can hide content placed too close to the spine. Workbooks also need enough outer space for comfortable writing.
6. Verify page order and blank pages
Check title pages, copyright pages, chapter starts, blank pages and final pages. In duplex books, blank pages may be intentional. Do not remove them automatically without understanding the pagination design.
7. Prepare the cover separately when required
A wraparound cover usually includes back cover, spine and front cover in one layout. Spine width depends on final page count and paper thickness. Finalize the interior before locking the cover dimensions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a print-ready PDF?
It is a final PDF prepared at the intended printing dimensions with required fonts, images, margins, bleed and page order already checked.
Should fonts be embedded in a printing PDF?
Yes, font embedding or correct font handling helps prevent substitutions and layout changes.
Do all pages need bleed?
Bleed is generally needed where artwork is intended to reach the final cut edge; confirm the exact requirement with the printer.
Can I resize an A4 PDF to A5 for printing?
It may be technically possible, but simple scaling can make text and margins unsuitable. Reflowing the layout at the intended trim size is better.
How is book spine width calculated?
Spine width depends mainly on final page count and the thickness or bulk of the selected paper.
